Geotextiles, which are in the geosynthetic family, are generally manufactured from synthetic fibres (polypropylene, polyester, polyethylene) and come in various forms. They have many applications and are used in construction, civil engineering works, environmental applications, horticulture and landscaping.

Reinforcement, by improving load distribution on soils;
Separation of two substrates, by keeping two types of soil or fill from being mixed;
Protection of another surface, generally a geomembrane, against punching or tearing;
Filtration, by holding soil in place and allowing water to flow out;
Drainage, by water transport within the geotextile matrix.
There are a number of types of geotextile, categorised by manufacturing method. The two most common types are nonwoven geotextiles and woven geotextiles; there are also high-performance geotextiles, used for specific applications.
